Rudy Giuliani — the disgraced former New York City mayor who chose to flush his reputation down the drain by not only joining Trump’s clownish regime but by becoming one of his most reliably rabid, unhinged defenders — appeared on Meet the Press this morning and gave a laughable performance almost akin to Kellyanne Conway’s infamous “alternative facts” debacle.
During a discussion with Chuck Todd, Giuliani addressed the fact that President Trump still hasn’t met with special counsel Robert Mueller to testify about what he knows about the Russian interference in the 2016 election. The administration has publicly flirted with the idea in the past, but refuses to actually follow through on it.
Giuliani trotted out one of his favorite talking points, alleging that such a sitdown could turn into a “perjury trap,” an utterly nonsensical phrase. If Trump doesn’t want to be charged with lying to Mueller he can simply not lie to Mueller. Giuliani, of course, knows that Trump is a pathological liar and the likelihood that he could get through an entire face-to-face with Mueller without spewing falsehoods is exceedingly low.
As the interview progressed, Giuliani became increasingly agitated and visibly seemed to be losing his train of thought. He said that it would be “silly” for Trump to testify and tell the truth because he’d only be dealing with “somebody’s version of the truth, not the truth.”
“Truth is truth,” Todd shot back, doing his best to hold in his laughter.
“No it isn’t truth! Truth isn’t truth!” Giuliani sputtered. In response, Todd hung his head and laughed before pointing out that Giuliani’s comments would become a “bad meme.”
While the interview is certainly entertaining in terms of its pure absurdity, it’s also a prime example of the disturbing, Orwellian rhetoric projected by the White House on a daily basis. This administration is so nihilistic, so cruel, so deeply incompetent, that in order for them to even pretend they’re doing a good job they have to reject reality at every turn and fabricate a make-believe world for Trump’s followers to live in. It’s a dangerous trend, and just one of the countless reasons Democrats have to take back the government as soon as possible.
