The Syracuse frat members caught holding racist pledge ceremony just got what they deserve

While racist apologists will contend that Trump was elected solely due to feelings of “economic anxiety” felt by white Americans in labor sectors that have been hit hard by globalization, the reality is far uglier.

A large chunk of voters chose Trump not despite his racist rhetoric but because of it. There is a nonnegligible, white subsection of the electorate that sees white privilege eroding, even if they refuse to admit that such a thing exists in the first place, and they’re desperate to hold on to it.

It’s for this reason that we’ve seen so many racists of every stripe, from Neo-Nazis to Neo-Confederates to plain old Walmart parking lot bigots more confident in their ability to spew ignorant filth without repercussions. Once such group of deplorable individuals was recently filmed at Syracuse University.

The disgusting videos show members of a fraternity delighting in the most racist, anti-semitic, homophobic, and ableist language imaginable.

“I solemnly swear to always have hatred in my heart for n*ggers, sp*cs and most importantly the f*cing k*kes,” says the man on screen as he engages in some kind of oath.

The outrage was widespread and immediate and the University took necessary action despite the tepid protestations by the frat members that the hateful comments were meant as satire. NBC News reports that that fraternity has been permanently expelled from campus.

“The words and behaviors in the second video are appalling and disgusting on many intersecting grounds. They especially offend all Syracuse University holds dear about diversity and inclusion of people with disabilities,” Syverud wrote. “I ask all of us who care about our community and its values to reaffirm them by emphatically rejecting all this video represents. There is absolutely no place at Syracuse University for tolerance of this behavior,” said Syracuse Chancellor Kent Syverud.

Some students will also face disciplinary action, that could result in personal suspension or expulsion. Syracuse should be commended for taking the appropriate steps to combat this kind of hatred. It can’t be condoned and it can’t be ignored.
