President Trump’s mission to destroy the United States’ most important international relationships took another turn for the worst today, with a harsh rebuke from the Mexican government.
Mexico has been a recurring, prominent scapegoat for Trump and his administration for far too long. He launched his campaign with the racist dog whistle claim that our southern neighbor and close ally is flooding our country with rapists, then upped his rhetoric by suggesting the United States construct an absurd, wasteful wall along the Mexican border. It’s an idiotic concept that he continues to advocate for despite stiff opposition from Congress.
It now appears that the Mexican government is finally fed up with Trump’s racist, xenophobic comments. The Associated Press reports that Mexican senators have unanimously passed a nonbinding measure calling for Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto to suspend joint cooperation with the United States over security and immigration issues.
Specifically, the statement called for Mexico to stop aiding the U.S. “in the fight against transnational organized crime.” The senators want the suspension of cooperation to continue until the American President displays “the civility and respect that the people of Mexico deserve.” In other words, in his pathetic attempts to sound tough on crime, Trump has severely hampered our ability to fight it. We need the Mexican government to effectively combat the threats that violent cartels pose to both nations.
Additionally, the senators condemned the “baseless and offensive comments about Mexico and Mexicans,” a clear response to his disgusting, bigoted language that he can’t seem to resist spewing.
The move comes as Trump begins floating the idea of sending the National Guard to the Mexican border, a ridiculous and aggressive action that — even in suggestion form — is already straining the increasingly tense relations between Mexico and America. The senators singled this out this militarization in their statement as particularly detrimental.
Trump is weakening the United States in ways hitherto imagined. If he isn’t stopped, the United States will stand alone, isolated and weakened. He has to go.
