South Carolina Republicans just launched a plan to secede from the union over guns

- 17.13

The Confederacy will rise again, at least if a group of South Carolina Republicans gets their way.

According to The Hill, several state legislators in the former Confederate state have introduced a bill that would allow the state to make a second attempt at secession if the federal government were to seize any legally purchased firearms from South Carolina residents.

The bill, which would allow the State Legislature to open a debate on seceding from the Union if they determine that the 2nd Amendment is being violated, is now being considered by the South Carolina House Judiciary Committee.

The text of the bill states that:

“the general assembly shall convene to consider whether to secede from the United States based upon the federal government’s unconstitutional violation of the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution if the federal government confiscates legally purchased firearms in this state.”

The move made by Republican representatives Mike Pitts, Jonathon Hill and Ashley Trantham comes as public calls for an assault weapons ban continue to grow in the aftermath of the activism by the survivors of the school massacre in Parkland, Florida.

With support for stricter gun regulations now at the highest level in at least a quarter of a century (68% of the respondents in a recent POLITICO/Morning Consult poll affirmed that they want tighter controls on weapons), the South Carolina Republicans are trying to fight a broad wave of public sentiment with a radical proposal that harkens back to the state’s history as the first of the southern states to secede from the Union in an action that set off the Civil War, the bloodiest in the nation’s history.

Local political analysts give the newly proposed measure slim chance of actually passing during this legislative session, particularly since there is an April 10th deadline for the bill to be passed from the Judiciary committee to a full House vote and be sent to the South Carolina Senate for approval.

The fact that Republicans are even considering secession in the state at this point merely proves that they love their guns more than they love their country and its fellow citizens. They would rather destroy the country than give up their ability to hurt and kill their fellow Americans. In the heart of evangelical country, the ability to understand and follow the commandment “Thou shalt not kill” is seemingly absent.
