The NRA and other gun apologists are always looking to place the blame for gun violence on anywhere but the ridiculously easy access to weapons in this country. Violent movies and video games are a frequent target of people trying to link exposure to media to a behavioral predilection for murderous tendencies.
Bad parenting is another reason used by the “guns don’t kill people, people kill people” crowd. Now, a mother in Ohio has been arrested for bad parenting after her eight-year-old son shot his four-year-old sister multiple times in their home in Hayesville, according to the Mansfield News Journal.
. The Ashland County Sheriff’s Office responded to an emergency call yesterday afternoon to find that the young girl’s injuries were luckily not life-threatening. After taking the woman’s daughter to University Hospital’s Samaritan Medical Center, they took the mother into custody and placed the son with child services.
The wounded daughter is now in stable condition and is expected to recover fully. The Ashland County Prosecutor’s Office is expected to review the details of the case tomorrow and decide whether to bring charges against the mother.
While details of the incident are sketchy at this point, it’s obvious that the firearm used by the eight-year-old was not secured properly, but it’s also obvious that if no gun was in the household then none of this would have occurred at all. That tragedy was avoided was just a circumstance of a young child’s luck in not having great aim, but it could have been avoided entirely if there was no gun to be found in the first place.
