At the heart of Donald Trump’s espoused worldview is a throbbing knot of rank hypocrisy. He rails against immigrants as if they’re some mortal pox on our country despite the fact that his own wife, the mother of one of his children, is an immigrant from Slovenia. Clearly, Donald Trump doesn’t have too much of an issue with immigration when it personally benefits him and nets him a beautiful supermodel wife.
A recent report from The Washington Post pointed out some strange irregularities with how Melania was able to immigrate to the United States in the first place. In 2000, while still carrying her maiden name Knauss, Melania applied for a special EB-1 visa to move permanently to America.
The nature of the visa raised eyebrows upon further inspection because it’s a kind ostensibly reserved for people with “extraordinary ability.” One former Democratic Congressman told The Post that it’s colloquially referred to as the “Einstein Visa.” Normally, they are handed out to scholars, successful entrepreneurs, or Olympic athletes.
Less than 1% of immigrants in 2001 received their visa through the EB-1 program. Melania was somehow one of them. She was but one of five from her native Slovenia to receive one that year.
Her successful immigration, in turn, allowed her to sponsor the immigration of her parents through family reunification allowances, which have recently come under attack from President Trump under the loaded buzzword moniker “chain migration.” He’s trying to dismantle the same rules that allowed his wife’s parents to move to America.
Several experts that spoke to The Washington Post found it strange that Melania was somehow able to obtain such a sought-after visa given that her largest accomplishments at the time included runway shows, an appearance in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit model edition, and a cigarette billboard advertisement in New York City. In other words, no small successes in the modeling world, but a far cry from the theory of relativity.
Twitter user David Amrod (@bendybubble) shared a video questioning Melania’s Einstein visa. Strangely, it appears Melania clicked “like” on the video.
An automated account that tracks the Twitter behavior of members of the Trump family flagged the strange behavior. Sometime after Melania liked the video, she went back and unliked it. Unfortunately for her, screenshots had already spread.
It’s still not clear why Melania would endorse a video dissecting the shady nature of her visa. Maybe it was an accident, or maybe she’s a little more like her internet troll husband than previously thought.
