Former President Jimmy Carter has lost none of his wit or perceptiveness even at the ripe old age of 93. Appearing on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, President Carter had some zingers ready when Colbert set him up with questions about the Trump administration.
Colbert’s questions were not necessarily tongue-in-cheek, but Carter took them as straight lines nonetheless. When the late night host asked the former president if America really did “want a jerk as president,” Carter responded with a hearty affirmative.
“Apparently, from this recent election, yes. I never knew it before,” Carter said.
Colbert then quizzed the former Democratic president on the most important qualities that the President of the United States needs in his job.
“I used to think it was to tell the truth,” Carter replied. “But I’ve changed my mind lately,” he added in an acknowledgement that that quality has been completely absent from the current administration’s skill set.
President Carter was on the late night talk show to promote his latest book, Faith: A Journey For All. In keeping with the spiritual theme of the book, Carter admitted that he prayed for Trump.
“I pray that he’ll be a good president and that he’ll keep our country at peace and that he’ll refrain from using nuclear weapons and that he will promote human rights. So yeah, I pray for him,” he revealed.
Let’s hope that Carter’s prayers are answered, as enormous and unlikely a request as they may be.
