Two students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School appeared on HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher Friday night, continuing their crusade to make sure last month’s school shooting massacre in Parkland, Florida is the last one of its kind.
Survivors David Hogg and Cameron Kasky made the trip to Los Angeles to bring their #NeverAgain battle cry to Maher’s politically charged late night audience. They also were there to promote the March For Our Lives, the upcoming march on Washington, D.C. to demand lawmakers implement common sense gun control reforms.
“With the march we want Americans to stop being afraid of demanding our politicians to take action. They work for us, we don’t work for them,” Kasky said. “The march is us coming out and saying to our employees, ‘You guys suck at your job.’ ”
Similar marches are being organized around the country to compliment the one in our nation’s capital, where many of the survivors of the shooting will be.
When Maher asked about how it felt to be targeted by NRA, Kasky had some choice words for Wayne LaPierre and Dana Loesch.
“You can say that we don’t know what we’re talking about because we’re only 17,” he said, “but until you’ve been on the receiving end of an AR-15, until you’ve been locked in your classroom… We’ve seen our friends text their parents goodbye. We are the experts. We know exactly what we’re talking about. How dare you tell us we don’t know what we’re talking about.”
“We’re not trying to tear aport the second amendment,” Kasky implored later. “We’re just kids begging for our lives, getting murdered in our classroom.”
Maher also asked how it felt to be going up against President Trump on this issue, and David Hogg didn’t hold back.
The White House invited him and other students to the listening session they hastily arranged to make it appear that Trump was engaged on the issue, but Hogg felt it was “very offensive” for the President to host an event on the same day as their town hall in Florida, and because “there were funerals the next day, there was mourning we still had to do.”
“I ended on this message with them,” Hogg added, “I said, ‘We don’t need to listen to President Trump. President Trump needs to listen to the screams of the children and the screams of this nation.'”
