Donald Trump took a break from fretting over the disclosure of the embarrassing details of his incompetent administration as revealed in Michael Wolff’s tell-all insider’s look at the White House to hold a thoroughly partisan meeting with Republican Senators to plan how to build his expensive, ridiculous, and impractical wall on the U.S.-Mexican border.
Then, of course, he tweeted about it.
Thank you to the great Republican Senators who showed up to our mtg on immigration reform. We must BUILD THE WALL, stop illegal immigration, end chain migration & cancel the visa lottery. The current system is unsafe & unfair to the great people of our country – time for change!

Trump’s antipathy towards immigrants has led many to charge the President with blatant racism, and, given the facts about immigration, those charges are difficult to refute.
Trump’s ideas on immigration reform have the suffered from the same type of stunted growth as his hands have apparently. That they are rooted in fear rather than facts is obvious by his continued harping about “THE WALL.”
The truth is that more Mexican immigrants are returning home than arriving in the United States. According to a report from the Center For American Progress, from 2009 to 2014, 1 million immigrants returned to Mexico while 870,000 arrived in the United States. This decline can be attributed to a drop of unauthorized Mexican immigrants, which peaked in 2007 at 6.9 million.
That’s hardly a trend that justifies the expenditure of millions of taxpayer dollars, the despoiling of a vital environmentally-sensitive area along the Rio Grande border between the two nations, and the seizure of privately owned land under eminent domain that would be necessary to accomplish Trump’s wet dream of an impenetrable border. Plus, illegal immigrants and the people who smuggle them into the USA have ladders and know how to dig tunnels, so the effectiveness of Trump’s big solution to illegal immigration is extremely questionable, to say the least.
Trump drags out all of the dog whistles for his racist base in this tweet. Efforts to keep refugee families together becomes “chain migration.” The visa lottery is the term Trump gives to the Diversity Immigrant Visa program, which was set up to increase immigration from countries with historically low numbers of immigrants to the U.S., helpful if you actually value diversity and believe that it’s what makes our nation stronger, but not a policy very popular amongst white-supremacists.
Given the scandals rising from Wolff’s new book and the ever-tightening noose that Robert Mueller is slowly tightening around the necks of the administration it’s not surprising that Trump is reverting to his favorite campaign tactic of fear-mongering to distract the public.
