President Trump rarely gets it right, but his assessment of Senator Ted Cruz’s (R-TX) serial mendacity has been repeatedly vindicated. “Lyin’ Ted,” as Trump called him, has at best a tenuous relationship with the truth, at worst an adversarial one.
Today, Cruz once again demonstrated his dishonesty and lack of moral character. During a conversation with reporters, Cruz claimed that the government shutdown — which happened because Republicans refused to provide protections for DREAMers and funding for CHIP — was solely the fault of Democrats.
He disingenuously claimed that he has always been opposed to government shutdowns and that he strongly opposed the one in 2013. He failed to mention that he played a big part in the previous shutdown because he and the rest of the GOP tried to hold government funding hostage in search of a way to damage the Affordable Care Act.
Unwilling to let his lies go unchallenged, MSNBC’s Kasie Hunt immediately called him out for it. Cruz insisted that she was “factually incorrect” and was simply trying to push a false media narrative, which is akin to Trump’s strategy of constantly calling negative press coverage of his administration “fake news.” Eventually, Cruz ended the segment by abruptly walking off.
Hunt offered some final thoughts:
“That was an interesting exchange. I would just like to say, I was going back and forth with the senator. He’s technically correct about the way that the procedure of this played out, but there is no question about how the government shutdown unfolded in 2013, which is that Senate Republicans pushed to defund Obamacare,” she said, before going on to thoroughly break down the 2013 shutdown and Cruz’s prominent role in it.
