Mitch McConnell just defied Trump’s latest tweet in startling rebuke

- 13.30

One by one the Republicans are starting to break down and break with Trump. The latest is Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

This morning he released a statement officially opposing changing legislative rules to utilize the “nuclear option.” This would give Republicans the ability to pass a budget with a mere 51 votes, rather that 60 votes.

This is in direct opposition to the President’s position, stated just a few hours earlier this morning on Twitter.

“The Republican Conference opposes changing the rules on legislation,” a spokesman for McConnell said.

Even with the nuclear option, Republicans would need to keep the troops in order fully. They hold 51 seats in the Senate, which means a passing vote would require full cooperation and not one single Republican defection.

That might not even work, either. In the last round of voting before the failure of the budget bill that lead to the government shutdown on Friday night, four Republicans voted against.

So the nuclear option might not even help matters. And McConnell is at least smart enough to know that enacting the nuclear option is a big move that could have unintended consequences further down the line. And even he can’t deny that his house is in disarray. His party has full control of all three branches of government and still couldn’t muster the unity to avert this government shutdown. Taking drastic measures at a time like this would be ill advised.

But then again, that’s exactly what the President is. Numerous sources inside the White House say that not only is Trump undercutting himself with constant flip flopping and contradicting positions, but his own aides and advisers are doing so as well.

The nuclear option would be a nuclear disaster and Mitch McConnell proved it with his statement.
