Former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon said Thursday morning that "nothing will ever come between us and President Trump and his agenda," an assurance issued to a caller on Breitbart radio one day after the president said Bannon “lost his mind” when he left the administration.
“We're tight on this agenda as we've ever been,” Bannon said Thursday in remarks that were initially reported by CNN.
The former White House chief strategist’s denial of a rift between him and the president followed the publication of excerpts from a forthcoming book in which Bannon is quoted as calling a summer, 2016, meeting between Donald Trump Jr., Paul Manafort and Jared Kushner and a Russian attorney promising Kremlin-sourced incriminating information on Hillary Clinton “treasonous” and “unpatriotic.”
Excerpts of the book characterize White House staffers as unorganized and back-biting and the president as narcissistic, inept and ignorant. White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday that “95 percent” of the interviews conducted by author Michael Wolff were conducted “at the request of Mr. Bannon.”
In response to the book, Trump released a scathing statement denouncing his former campaign chief executive and chief strategist. Bannon, the president said in his statement, had pretended to “have had influence to fool a few people with no access and no clue, whom he helped write phony books.”
“Steve Bannon has nothing to do with me or my presidency,” Trump wrote in the statement. “When he was fired, he not only lost his job, he lost his mind.”
Still, Bannon has spoken warmly about the president in the hours since Trump’s statement was released. In a Wednesday night appearance on Breitbart radio, Bannon did not immediately address the president’s statement and only wound up doing so in response to remarks from callers.
“The President of the United States is a great man. You know I support him day in and day out, whether going through the country giving the Trump Miracle speech or on the show or on the website, so I don’t you have to worry about that,” Bannon said in response to one caller.
“President Trump, with the whole swamp up there, the D.C. apparatus, the nullification project, everything going on; he is fighting every day. There’s no doubt in your mind, right? And maybe things get off track, or stuff gets said, and all this heated stuff,” he said to another. “But however, this is a guy, you voted for him, you supported him, is there any doubt in your mind he’s been fighting for and working for you, the deplorables, the forgotten man and woman, the silent majority, every day he’s been there?”
