A former Montana House Majority Leader could face up to as much as 28 years in prison for running a meth ring, reports The Associated Press.
Not surprisingly, the man is a Republican, demonstrating once again that the party of “family values” only really cares about forcing others to act a certain way and in practice its members display a disturbing degree of legal and moral licentiousness in their own lives.
Federal prosecutors call Michael David Lange, the “key player” in a trafficking operation that brought large quantities of methamphetamines into Montana, a state he was previously elected to help govern for three years.
Lange was forced to abdicate his leadership position after a video of him giving a profane rant about the Democratic Governor in 2007. After his political career, he encountered problems with the law and ended up serving time for possession of methamphetamines.
It’s estimated that Lange facilitated the import of between 20 and 50 pounds of the illegal substance in less than a year. 2.5 pounds of meth were found in his house in October, as well as 13 ounces of cocaine.
Reports Matthew Brown of The Associated Press:
“Lange pleaded guilty in September Lange, 57, pleaded guilty in September to conspiracy to possess and distribute methamphetamine and possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute.”
Lange will be sentenced later this month.
“Lange was responsible for polluting the Billings community and surrounding areas with a significant quantity of highly pure methamphetamine. The negative impact associated with at least 20 pounds of methamphetamine is difficult to overstate,” Assistant U.S. Attorney John Sullivan stated, reports the AP.
The AP adds that Lange advocated for $4 million in funding to an anti-meth public relations firm, a glaring display of hypocrisy that now seems commonplace for members of the GOP.
It’s the same sort of two-faced behavior we often see when virulently anti-LGBTQ Republicans are outed as homosexuals themselves. They love to tell other people how to live and behave but refuse to apply the same sort of regressive, antiquated morality to their own lives. The people deserve better than men like Michael Lange.
